Traditional martial arts is centered around respect - respect for yourself, respect for others, and respect for the dojo (training hall). Self respect is very important in developing confidence and a positive attitude. The way you feel about yourself can affect the way you treat others and your interaction with them. If you don't respect yourself, you may find that others may not have much respect for you either. You may also find that it is difficult to respect others when you don't respect yourself. Respect starts with you, so learn how to respect yourself.
Self respect begins by taking care of yourself and your belongings. Participating in a martial arts program is a great way to show self respect by working on improving yourself both physically and mentally. Proper cleaning of your skin and equipment with MatGuard or Lysol after training also shows great self respect.
In addition to respecting yourself, it is just as important to respect others. Respecting others can be as simple as placing your shoes, coat, and bag in designated areas to keep the floors clear for others. Removing your “outside” shoes before entering the matted areas in the dojo is also a great way to show respect for other students and the dojo. This simple act can help to prevent others who train barefoot from stepping on stones or dirt and can help to increase the lifespan of the mats in the dojo.
An easy way to respect others is to think about how you would want them to treat you, and then treat others that way. For instance, if you would want another student to wipe their sweat or blood off the mats or equipment before you use it, then you can show others respect by returning the favor for them.
When you show respect for yourself and others in the dojo and in the world, you will realize that you will feel good about yourself.
